Sue Slaven

Sue Slaven, age 79, of Whitley City, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 12, 2025, and was placed in the care of Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the funeral home, with Bro. Maurice Branscum officiating. Burial followed in Angel Cemetery.
Sue was born on February 17, 1946, in Sidney, Ohio, to Clarence Branscum and Edna Lee Jones Branscum. Together with her husband, Alton Slaven, Sue owned and operated Slaven’s Grocery, a beloved mom-and-pop store in Indiana. She cherished the opportunity to serve her community and enjoyed every moment spent talking with customers and neighbors. She also worked for RCA during her time in Indiana. After relocating to McCreary County, Sue continued her passion for helping others by working in the home health care profession. However, her greatest joy came from time spent with her family, whom she loved deeply and unconditionally.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alton, and her sister Patty Crabtree.
Sue is survived by her four sons: Michael Joseph Slaven, Mendle Carland Slaven and his wife, Dee, Merrill Tyrone Slaven, and Matthew Shelby Slaven and his wife, Jenni; her brothers: Herbie Branscum, Maurice Branscum, Wendell Branscum, and Larry Branscum; grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Daniel, Lily, Emma, Colton, and Sydney Slaven, and numerous great grandchildren.
