The saga of the December 29, 2024 arrest of a McCreary County man on 18 charges began when McCreary County Deputy Sheriff Alex Jones noticed a vehicle that did not stop at a stop sign as it approached from old KY 592. As the car transitioned from KY 92 to KY 592, Jones noted the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The vehicle failed to stop when Jones activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop. When the driver failed to comply, Jones turned on his siren and notified dispatch of the situation. While following the vehicle, Jones noted it reached speeds of 70 MPH on a straight stretch and reportedly observed the vehicle cross over the double yellow line and enter the opposing lane of traffic. Eventually, the vehicle failed to navigate a right-hand curve, resulting in the vehicle moving up an embankment and colliding with the front of a residence, resulting in structural damage to the residence. Reportedly, the vehicle came within 20 feet of striking several individuals who were standing outside the residence. Damage to the residence reportedly included a breached wall, damaged kitchen cabinets, and the displacement of a dishwasher and refrigerator.
Upon colliding with the house, the driver exited his vehicle and fled on foot. Allegedly, a brief foot chase ensued, culminating in the apprehension of the driver approximately 150 yards from the collision site. Once in custody, Jones transferred custody of the driver to Deputy Gerald Simpson who identified the male subject as 47-year-old Billy Gene Correll, Jr of Monticello, KY. Items located in the vehicle included a glass pipe associated with the use Methamphetamine and a Taurus 9MM pistol equipped with an extended magazine.
