McCreary’s Veterans of Foreign Wars want to honor
local hometown, military veterans.
The members of McCreary County’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5127 Charles E. Moore encourage local businesses and individuals to support a project that recognized hometown military heroes.
“We want to honor and spotlight veterans within McCreary County,” First Sergeant Garry Galloway explained. “Based on Army values, the men and women who have served from McCreary County should be recognized.”
Veteran Paul McCreight noted the project is also a Main Street beautification project.
Veterans belonging to Post 5127 are actively seeking sponsors for the Hometown Heroes project in which photographs of McCreary County’s combat veterans are printed on street flags. The flags are bracketed to light poles for display during special occasions along Main Street in Whitley City. A sponsorship costs $200 to cover the cost of one photograph flag and bracket. The VFW would like to reach its goal of 36-40 flags.
After seeing the flags displayed in another town, First Sergeant Galloway discussed the project with others belonging to his post.
“I brought it up during a meeting and everyone was all in,” Galloway said. “Anytime, I see a good idea somewhere else, I think, ‘We can do that in McCreary County!’”
For more information regarding the project or to sign up for a sponsorship, interested individuals can contact First Sergeant Galloway at 804-647-0900.
