USP McCreary: an update
As a follow up to last week’s front page article regarding allegations of hunger and violence at USP McCreary, The McCreary County Voice reports the following recent developments.
Through credible sources, The Voice learned all USP McCreary inmates are now receiving three hot meals daily. The restrictions on commissary privileges for groups of inmates, ordered in December 2021 and May 2023, have been lifted. Also, plexiglass partitions placed in the visiting room during the COVID-19 pandemic were ordered removed.
Additionally, a change in wardens at USP McCreary has been announced. The announcement specifies the move of John Gilley as Warden at USP McCreary to Warden at USP Lee. The announcement specifies the move of Stanley Lovett as Complex Warden at FCC Hazelton to Warden at USP McCreary.
The Voice also has received updated information regarding the November 4, 2023 death of 60-year-old Gregory Potter, an inmate at USP McCreary. According to the information received, the report summarizing the November 6, 2023 autopsy conducted on the deceased inmate classifies his cause of death as “Asphyxia” with the contributing factor of “Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.” Although decomposition changes in the body somewhat limited the autopsy evaluation, the manner of death is classified as “Homicide.”
The report specifies if the history provided prior to the autopsy proves to be incorrect or changes, the cause and manner of death will be amended.
The Voice reached out to USP McCreary for more information concerning Potter’s death, especially regarding a rumored delay in discovering the inmate’s body. As of press time, The Voice has received no response from prison officials.
The Voice will continue to follow developments as warranted.
