Wet Williamsburg?

Just weeks after a wet/dry referendum failed to pass in McCreary County, one neighbor to the east is looking to expand their options for the purchase of alcohol.

WYMT reported that Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison is circulating a petition that would call for an election to move the city from “moist” status to full on “wet.”

If successful an election will be held, similar to the recent vote in McCreary County, where city residents will decide the future of alcohol sales in Williamsburg.

The city went “moist” in 2012 after just 14 votes separated the “yes” supporters from the “no.” Over 1,000 citizens voted in that election.

Since then, only two restaurants in Williamsburg sell alcohol. With “moist” status a restaurant must seat at least 100 people and have 70 percent of their revenue come from food sales.

A “wet” city lowers that restriction to only 50 seats and 50 percent of sales.

It would also allow for retail package sales within city limits.

Harrison was quoted as saying such a move would prove to be of economic benefit for the city.
