An early morning structure fire, occurring at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Monday (2/26/24), led to the entrapment of two individuals. Prior to fire department units arriving on scene, two first responders, South McCreary Fire Chief Tim Cox and LA Henry, extricated the two entrapped, one of which was the body of 47-year-old Charles Michael of Strunk, KY. Michael’s body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort for an autopsy. The second individual was airlifted to a hospital in Louisville, KY. The fire occurred at the Strunk Post Office building, in the residential rental section adjoining the Post Office. The post office section received only minimal smoke damage. South McCreary and Whitley City Volunteer Fire Departments, McCreary County EMS, PHI Air Medical, McCreary County Coroner’s Office, U.S. Postal Service Police, the Whitley City Postmaster, Citi-Power, SKRECC, and the McCreary County Sheriff’s Department were among those responding to the emergency.
