The Cross of Jesus Christ offers every individual the possibility of having their past sins forgiven. The Bible is very clear when it tells us, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” The Bible says, in the book of Psalms, “For as high as the heavens are above the Earth, so great is His steadfast, love toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.”
The Bible tells us in the book of Micah, “He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” This is where the phrase comes from, “Our sins have been cast into the sea of forgetfulness.” One writer said, “All of our sins have been put into the sea of forgetfulness, and God puts up a big sign that says ‘No fishing.’” The Apostle Paul said, “Forgetting those things that are behind, I press toward the mark of the high calling in Christ.”
David declared those who know their sins are forgiven are blessed people. This was made possible by the fact that He who knew no sin became sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” Many times in church, we hear the term justification or justified. A great way to define justified is like this, “Just as if I’d never done it.” It’s an amazing truth about the grace of God that we are treated as if we had never done anything wrong. This again is made possible by the blood of the cross of Christ.
When the devil reminds you of your past, remind him of his future. Recently, I’ve heard it said, “Reminding me of my past sins is like robbing a house I used to live in. I don’t live there anymore.” As it says, in the book of Hebrews, “For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” The truth is your friends may still remember your sins, your family may still remember them, and the church may still remember them, but God declares that He will remember them no more.
When we get into our cars, one of the things we recognize is we have a large windshield and a very small rearview mirror. Both of them are important to driving down the road. However, the reason the rearview mirror is so small is because it’s more important to see where I’m going than where I’ve been. Imagine if we had a large rearview mirror and a very small opening to see where we are going. We would be an accident waiting to happen. Many times, that’s why we can’t live in the fullness of what God has for us because we are spending our life looking at our past and not focused on the future we have in Christ. We can always learn from the past, but we do not have to live in the past.
As believers, we can rejoice in the fact that the blood of Jesus has thoroughly cleansed us from our past sins.
